Chapter 400: In the end.
Chapter 400: In the end.
[MAY 30, 2026]
Mark sat before his computer that night, staring at the final Chapter of the novel he had updated.
He was finally done with it, and he couldn’t help but smile at the ending that had shaped into what it became. He was proud of it, and he was certain that Gideon would be happy that the book ended the way he had initially scripted it to be.
It was already evening, so he let out a yawn while he stretched himself, looking out through the window. The city was bustling with life, but after returning from the thrilling world of the novel, he didn’t think the city could match it.
It was strange. Almost like a dream. Sometimes it didn’t even feel as though it had happened. Sometimes he wondered if he ever went into the novel and came back. Sometimes he wondered if he even spoke to Eden before. Sometimes he wondered if he ever met Louis.
He had simply felt like he had slept off and saw himself in another world with a task. And then after he died, he had woken up laying on his desk, before his laptop.
But even whether it was a dream or not, it was still worth it all. And the thought of it always brought a smile to his face.
With a smile, he turned to his table where his phone was now ringing.
His editor was calling him.
One missed call, two missed calls... five missed calls.
Mark could tell he was mad. The plot of the book had completely taken a different turn from what the editor had recommended. It wasn’t a straight book anymore; it had become a BL galore with a happy ending. One with the villain successfully stealing the harem and having a wedding with them in the end.
Completely happy.
When he didn’t pick up the call, his editor sent him endless messages, and he just read through them without replying. His editor was mad and was threatening to punish him.
But Mark didn’t respond or do anything. He had already seen this coming, and so he was willing to face the consequences of whatever came up.
With a smile, he went through the comments from the readers.
They were all so positive. Everyone loved it and expressed crying over how beautiful it was. Mark was happy to hear that. He sighed as he leaned backward. "It’s 2026 already, Mr. Editor should grow up."
He shook his head with a smile as he turned to his side. The picture of him and Louis was there. And he stared at it for a while.
Louis looked like Lenny. Or so.
The only difference was the hair. Lenny had pink hair, but Louis had brown hair.
In the picture, the two of them were in their high school attire, standing close to each other with smiles on their faces while staring at the camera.
Mark smiled as he sighed at the picture hanging on the wall. Even after all this while, he still had the picture on his wall. It always brought him memories—memories from their childhood till their last moment together.
Memories they had spent together as friends and lovers. These memories hurt, but Mark loved the feeling as long as he could remember Louis forever.
He smiled at the picture as he said, "I guess I should thank fate for giving me a chance to see your face again and speak with you." He smiled. "You haven’t changed at all." He sighed as he turned back to his computer. "Hopefully I get an opportunity to drown in another long dream so I can meet you again." He smiled.
He continued going through the comments until he came across one comment. One he found interesting.
The comment was a bit long but was simply expressing how the reader actually understood, pitied, and loved Kyle’s character.
Mark slowly smiled as he nodded. "I guess so..." He turned and stared at another picture hanging at a distance.
It was a picture he had taken with Gideon. He stared at Gideon in the picture. "Crazy. I can’t believe you poured most of yourself into that character only for it to end up like that."
He smiled as he stared at his screen. He recalled his last conversation with Eden, recalling the question Eden had asked him about which male lead Gideon was.
He had given him a response which was correct but withheld some information.
Indeed, Gideon had poured all his personalities into the five male leads. But the five male leads only had about 50 percent of Gideon. The remaining 50 percent had gone to Kyle.
In the original script, Gideon had presented Kyle as a support role as well. He had given him the story of Eden’s childhood best friend and his most supportive fan even as a villain. Kyle was the character who had adored and supported Eden from childhood. He had liked him the longest, but they never ended up together, even in the original script.
Because Kyle had also ended up dead while protecting Eden in the final battle.
Mark recalled reading the script and questioning Gideon. "Huh? Why the hell would you write that? Why would you make him have most of yourself if he’s just a support role who will never be liked back and will end up dead? Isn’t this a love story for you and Eden? Why so?"
Gideon smiled as he said, "Yes, it’s a love story for us. That’s why 50 percent of me ends up with him and has a happier storyline."
"What about the rest?"
Gideon’s smile faded as he explained, "The remaining 50 percent represents my worry, which is greater than my assurance for us. Even though I’m together with him and want happiness for us in the end, I’m always worried that it won’t work out. I’m always making the most terrible decisions sometimes and making him unhappy, so I’m worried... and that worry is 50 percent of me to him... and that’s why he’s there."
"So... Kyle is actually 50 percent of you?"
He slowly nodded. "Yes, exactly. The more anxious side of me that’s worried that we won’t actually end up together. The side that just feels like a support role to Eden since he shines so bright before me. The side that feels like I don’t deserve him at all..." He sighed with a smile. "That’s just it."
Mark had stared at him as he said, "Shouldn’t you at least be positive?"
Gideon had smiled and said, "Don’t worry, it’s only a book. He’ll probably never know about it." He smiled. And that was why he never told Eden. He guessed Gideon would never want him to know.
Mark had also asked, "Then why is he a villain? I understand that Eden likes villains, so why did you have to make this most undesirable character with the highest percentage into a villain?"
Gideon hesitated and then smiled with a shrug. "Maybe that’s the part I want Eden to understand most... so I gave him the villain role of what Eden likes." He smiled. "Or maybe? I don’t know."
Mark knew Gideon knew and meant what he had said. All of it.
And it was ironically sad for Mark to think that Gideon was simply predicting his fate in the real world through this story. And in the end, his insecurities won. The greater percentage of himself in the relationship won. And Eden lost that percentage in the novel world too.
He sighed as he shook the thought off. "Really crazy guy..." He sighed as he ran his fingers across the keyboard.
He went to the title of the book. Since he was done, he wanted to change it to a more appropriate title.
He ran his fingers across the keys and effortlessly input the title that had been running through his mind for a while now.
