Chapter 168 - 154: Marriage Proposal
Chapter 168 - 154: Marriage Proposal
Annabelle Leighton shook her head.
"I’m not sure if I’m pregnant. I just came for a check-up."
"Where’s Morgan?"
"He’s at work. I haven’t told him yet."
Willow Thorne understood what Annabelle was thinking. After all, Morgan Hayes had a demanding job.
"I’ll stay with you then."
"No, it’s okay. You go on with your day."
"I’m free this afternoon, and I don’t feel right leaving you here alone."
Willow Thorne insisted on staying, so Annabelle Leighton didn’t refuse again.
Blood tests, an ultrasound—after a series of examinations, the doctor told Annabelle Leighton she wasn’t pregnant. Her irregular period was caused by work-related stress.
The result brought a wave of relief to Annabelle Leighton.
She couldn’t bear to imagine what utter chaos her life would become if she had really been pregnant.
Since it was a false alarm, Annabelle Leighton didn’t tell Morgan Hayes, but he found out about it from Willow Thorne anyway.
"Did you go to the hospital today?" Morgan Hayes asked after they finished dinner.
"Mhm, did Willow tell you?"
"Yes. Why didn’t you tell me you weren’t feeling well?"
"It’s nothing, not a big deal."
Morgan Hayes saw her calm expression, mulled it over for a moment, and asked, "How did you feel when you thought you might be pregnant?"
Annabelle Leighton thought for a moment before answering honestly, "It was complicated. There was a little bit of happiness, but I was mostly worried about my career."
"What do you mean by ’a little bit of happiness’?"
"You’re being very thorough," Annabelle Leighton said, glancing at Morgan Hayes. "What is it you want to know?"
"I want to know if I was part of that happiness."
"Silly. Of course you were. If I were pregnant, it would be our baby. Who else could it be?" Annabelle Leighton took the chance to turn the tables on him. "What about you? How did you feel when you heard I went to the hospital for a pregnancy test?"
"I had complicated feelings, too. I was happy, but mostly, I felt it was too soon."
Annabelle Leighton froze.
Morgan Hayes quickly took her hand and explained, "When I say too soon, I mean I wanted to propose first. I don’t want you to think I’m only marrying you because of a baby."
As soon as he finished speaking, he suddenly dropped to one knee before Annabelle Leighton.
"What are you doing?"
"Annie, will you marry me?"
Morgan Hayes pulled a cascade of items from his pocket. The diamond ring was just one of them; there was also a passbook, a property deed, and a bank card.
"You..."
"I’m serious." Morgan Hayes opened the ring box. The diamond glittered under the light. "From the moment we got together, I’ve planned my future with you in it. I want to build a little home with you, for no other reason than the fact that I love you."
He fumbled to press the bank card, property deed, and passbook into Annabelle Leighton’s hands.
"I know you’re not short on money, but this is a token of my sincerity. I have an apartment in Meritopia—the one I’m living in now—and back in my hometown, there’s a three-story house my family built. I haven’t been back in a long time, not since my grandparents passed away. I’ll take you to see it when we get the chance. This bank card is for my salary, which is deposited on the eighth of every month. The PIN is my birthday. I don’t spend much on my own, so I’ve managed to save a little bit over the years. It’s all in this passbook."
As he spoke, Morgan Hayes took out another passbook. "And this one... my uncle gave it to me the day we went to his house together. It’s the compensation money from when my father died in the line of duty, plus the inheritance my parents left me. My uncle has been keeping it for me. There’s over two million in here. He told me I could give it to my partner when I trusted her completely. Now, I want to give everything I have to you. Will you accept it?"
It was such a simple yet sincere proposal. Annabelle Leighton couldn’t stop the tears from falling.
She never, ever would have expected that a simple pregnancy scare would make Morgan Hayes care so much that he would propose.
"I will."
"That’s wonderful." Morgan Hayes got to his feet and pulled Annabelle Leighton into an excited hug. "Wife, I love you."
He switched to calling her that so quickly, but Annabelle Leighton liked it.
"Husband, I love you, too."
